Chester Tailwheel is a website dedicated to tail wheel flying. Additionally, we use this as a means to promote ourselves as flight instructors and the wonderful “stick and rudder” flying available in the famous Piper J3 Cub. The plane we utilize is a 1946 J3-C65 that has been upgraded with a larger O-200 engine and is owned and maintained by Mike Gozzo and Chester Charter. The Piper J3 Cub is popular among aviators as a truly classic and iconic airplane. It has served as a trainer to more pilots than almost any airplane, earning a reputation as easy to fly but yet challenging enough to force students to continually better themselves. We are based out of Chester Connecticut at Chester Airport (KSNC). Our flight instructors are dedicated to training pilots interested in learning how to fly a tail wheel aircraft. Did you know that according to the FAA only 15% of pilots can fly a tailwheel airplane? Why not become one of them!
We primarily give tail wheel endorsements and provide Sport pilot primary training. The J3 Cub falls within the weight and speed requirements of light sport aircraft, and has proven to be an excellent training aircraft for roughly 80 years! On occasion, we may give training in your own personal aircraft if we are familiar with the model and feel comfortable with the setup (some restrictions apply). Note that a tailwheel endorsement counts as WINGS credit through activity A070502-02.
